Why I love supporting clients to re-build food and body trust:
Like many young people contemplating their career path, I wasn't sure what I wanted to study in university. But I knew that I loved science and working with people, so nutrition was a natural fit.
After graduating and spending several years counselling clients in a variety of settings including hospitals, nursing homes, and private practice, I discovered that my true calling is helping clients improve their digestive health and expand their diet.
Digestive disorders and food allergies run in my family. I personally live with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and diverticular disease, and several family members have Crohn's disease. My nephew has multiple diagnosed food allergies.
Growing up, there was a lot of toilet talk around the dinner table. Associations (real or assumed) between food and symptoms were discussed as routinely as the weather. Symptom flares were attributed to wheat or nightshade vegetables, or some other forbidden food that had been in the media that week.
My brother and I now live in different cities. I'll never forget the year he and his young family visited for Christmas. I spent weeks planning the menu, scrutinizing recipes for ingredients on my nephew's allergen list, and finding palatable substitutions. It was an exhausting process, but I was proud and confident that I had created a delicious, allergen-free menu. Unfortunately, I may have been too heavy-handed when seasoning the stuffing with salt and pepper. Half way through dinner, my nephew started complaining about a "tingling tongue" and difficulty breathing. Fearing an anaphylactic reaction, we jumped in the car that snowy night and raced to the local hospital. Two hours later, the ER doctor confirmed that he was not experiencing an allergic reaction and sent us home.
This experience was a powerful reminder of the mind-body connection. While food reactions are often biological in origin, suffering may be amplified by conditioned food sensitivity, i.e., a hypervigilant nervous system reacting to food.
As a practitioner, I am pleased to help others learn about conditioned food sensitivities and find ways to rebuild their food and body trust.
